Civics In Earnest
Screen prints in black ink
First edition of 45 each
24” x 18” / 18” x 24”
I made this series of screen prints in response to my community’s collective acts of care and resilience in the wake of an egregious and inhumane surge of federal agents in our state. I find comfort in language’s power to inform and inspire us through the spectrum of human experiences and I wanted to use my skills and resources to help spread some positive messages to my peers doing mutual aid work in support of our immigrant neighbors.
With allusions to the US Constitution, the teachings of MLK Jr. and bell hooks, Samuel Beckett’s writings on endurance and contradictions, and the perennial questions we ask ourselves, these posters evoke our ancestors and creative thinkers in recognizing the inherit value we all embody as members of a community. We are tending to each other, leaning into the moment, and leaning on each other in acts of resistance and rest. We will continue to bear empathetic witness as we inhabit and co-create a civic life in earnest.
Proceeds will be donated to mutual aid organizations providing food and rent relief to families in Minneapolis.
